Jeff Bezos has emerged from stealth with Prometheus, an AI startup aimed at the engineering and manufacturing industries.
The company launched with $12 billion in Series B funding and is already valued at $40 billion, making it one of the most richly financed young AI companies ever.
Bezos is back in the boss chair after stepping down from the helm at Amazon in 2021, and his second act has serious backers: JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, DST Global, and Arch Venture Partners.
Combined with a $6.2 billion Series A when the company launched in November 2025, total funding now tops $18 billion.
The core bet is what Bezos calls an "artificial general engineer," AI models trained on real-world experimental data, robotics interactions, and engineering workflows.
Think physical environments like warehouses and factory floors rather than text and images, with targets spanning computing, aerospace, automotive, and drug discovery.
For Bezos, it's all productivity and profit math.
He describes the goal as taking a project that "was going to take 100 engineers 10 years to build" and shrinking it to something "10 engineers build in one year." The move fits Bezos's broader post-Amazon playbook, which includes building Blue Origin and backing AI ventures like Physical Intelligence and Generalist AI.
But Prometheus is a different animal in scale and ambition.
Bezos and co-CEO Vik Bajaj, who co-founded Alphabet's Verily health research lab, are also developing a Berkshire Hathaway-style portfolio vehicle, separately raising funds to acquire existing industrial giants or build competitors from scratch.
