Several countries are now looking to develop or expand their nuclear energy capacity over the coming decades.

However, one challenge remains – nuclear waste.

Disposing of waste materials from nuclear energy operations remains a complex task with no perfect solution.

As countries worldwide have grown their nuclear power capacity, many governments are still struggling to decide on the best solution for disposing of nuclear waste.

There arethree types of nuclear waste: low-, intermediate-, and high-level radioactive waste.

Most of the waste produced by nuclear plants consists of lightly contaminated items, such as tools and work clothing, with radioactivity levels of around 1 per cent.

High-level waste consists of spent fuel, which accounts for around 3 per cent of the total volume of waste from nuclear energy production, yet contains 95 per cent of the radioactivity.

Nuclear facility operators are responsible for the safe disposal of any radioactive waste they produce.

Nuclear power plants generate relatively little waste compared to many other energy sources; however, it is some of the most difficult to manage.
