This has led Google to suggest that the development of its new U.S.

data centre in Minnesota, and associated energy development, will have a positive benefit on the region’s transmission network.
Google has proposed an agreement with Xcel Energy to support significant wind, solar and battery storage development alongside its new 780-MW Project Skyway data centre.
The tech giant plans to finance Xcel's addition of 1.4 GW of wind, 200 MW of solar power and 300 MW of battery storage to the grid.
While the combined capacity of these projects exceeds the data centre's projected electricity demand, wind and solar generation fluctuate depending on weather conditions, and battery storage does not generate additional electricity.
Xcel Energy says the new energy resources will serve the wider grid, benefiting other customers as well as the data centre.
Google plans to cover the associated costs under the proposed agreement, including payments for capacity it does not fully use.
The aim is to get the residents of Pine Island, Minnesota, on board with its development plans, particularly as 71 per cent of Americans surveyed in aGallup pollearlier this year opposed the construction of a data centre in their local area.
Developing such a significant renewable energy project will also help Google meet its target of operating entirely on carbon-free energyby 2030.
Theproposed agreementincludes minimum demand charges and exit fees, meaning that Google will be required to finance the development of the infrastructure even if the demand for AI decreases.
